Cape Town has always produced a breed of DJ who add a different mix into any musical equation.

DJ MacAngel carries on this reportoire of unique Cape style sounds with elements of laid back Cape Town attitude combined with sounds that will chill your toes and pump the house vibe through your veins.

A good combination which bodes well for the future sounds of Cape Town.

CD Title: DJ MacAngel - Sample This, final edition

Record Label:   SoniQue Fusion

Press Publication:   Cape Times, "Top of the Times"

Date:   Friday, 26 July 2002

Review By: Jane Mayne

The spacious quality of the opening track immediately hooked me into this debut album by local creator, DJ MacAngel.

The album apparently comes after 15 long months of hard drive crashes and mastering sessions, and its eventual official launch at Buddhabar in July.

The hard groove of Interlude really pumps, but here he doesn't add much of melodic interest.

The tracks follow the more conventional house and techno route as Sample This progresses.

The soundman quotes track 12 (a ReMix by Bernhard Lloyd of Alphaville) as his Top 40 track, but Dejavu Dub, the morning after comes out tops for me.

Electro Bebop is also fun, and Le Mystique Sonar will be a dancefloor filler. Overall, it's a mix of chilled lounge and homeboy house.

Buy this at outlets like Look and Listen and CD Select.

~OFFICIAL 2002 PRE-RELEASE CD REVIEW~

CD Title: DJ MacAngel - Sample This, final edition

Record Label:   SoniQue Fusion

Review By: Toine Scholtz

This is a really solid album. It showcases a real progression of themes from more downtempo African-flavoured house, through techno and electro interpretation, across to the other end of deep, tribal house. The album shows a new maturity emerging in MacAngel's production styles and techniques. It is great to hear a wide range of experimentation on many of the tracks.

MacAngel is clearly not nervous to venture outside of the realm of commercial dance music production, and the elements which he draws through into a more conventional dance orientated medium work very well in their new surroundings. It is exciting to hear high quality dance music coming from South African producers, and particularly music which exhibits elements of a definitively African sound within the electronic dance medium.

A solid album.

I look forward to hearing more material from MacAngel.
